Winter? Here in Woodland Hills, We Say, ‘Bring It On!’
December 6, 2022When much of the country is dealing with cold temperatures and winter precipitation, we’re fortunate here in sunny Southern California. We don’t have to restrict our activities to inside venues. Nor do we have to bundle up when we want to do something outdoors.
Of course, residents at The Variel don’t have to venture out at all to enjoy a superbly prepared meal, meet friends for happy hour, indulge in a spa treatment, take a wellness class or relax as they watch a favorite flick on the big screen. They can do all of that and more right here at home.
For those times when they want a change of scenery, though, residents don’t need to go far to find an eclectic assortment of activities for seniors to engage in all year through.
Farmers Markets: Not Just for Foodies!
Sure, you can find an abundance of fresh produce, baked goods and other enticing prepared foods at local farmers markets. Do some browsing and you’ll also find hand-crafted items and unique products that are entirely gift-worthy.
Several of the farmers markets around here provide live music, and most have seated areas where you can sip a cup of freshly brewed coffee or indulge in something more substantial while you people-watch.
The Woodland Hills Farmers Market, open Saturdays from 8 AM to 1 PM, just got started this year and has already earned rave reviews. A little farther away, the Calabasas Farmers Market is also open on Saturdays during those same hours, and the Malibu Farmers Market is open on Sundays from 9 AM to 2 PM.
Gorgeous Botanical Gardens
For a relaxing and scenic stroll, it’s hard to beat the botanical gardens in the neighborhoods surrounding Woodland Hills. A quick online search will turn up several possibilities. Note that reservations may be required. Here are a few to get you started:
In Van Nuys, The Japanese Garden, or SuihoEn as it’s also known, has finally reopened after being closed during the pandemic. When we checked, it was open Mondays through Thursdays.
If you want to learn some history, you can take a tour of the Virginia Robinson Gardens, which was the first estate in Beverly Hills. There are monthly events on the six-acre property, so be sure to take a look at the calendar on the website.
You can combine history and culture with your botanical garden experience with a visit to the Getty Villa Museum in Pacific Palisades. The museum features Greco-Roman antiquities, and there’s a café on-site. Other than Tuesdays, it’s open every day from 10 AM to 5 PM.
Want to Pick(le) up the Pace?
For those who want to get their heart rate going, the Woodland Hills area offers many options. For instance, the Warner Tennis Center is open seven days a week.
And now, Woodland Hills has the only dedicated pickleball facility in the Valley — Warner Center Pickleball. Don’t know how to play? Clinics and lessons are available. It’s also open seven days a week, though weekend hours are limited.
Hiking is always a popular pastime here in Southern California, especially when it’s a little cooler outside. You can choose from dozens of trails in and around Woodland Hills. The scenery can be quite spectacular.
Wine Tasting Without the Long Drive
If you’re an oenophile, you don’t have to go travel to Sonoma or Napa to sample fantastic wines. You could plan a day trip to a number of wineries not far from Woodland Hills.
Malibu Wines & Beer Garden in West Hills is another option, whether you’re planning a celebration for a small group or just looking for something different to do. You can bring your own food or order from a select menu there, and the venue has special events each month.
Calling All Car Buffs
When looking for unique activities for seniors, a car show might not be the first thing that comes to mind. But Supercar Sunday isn’t your average car show.
Sponsored by Porsche Woodland Hills, Supercar Sunday is a weekly event held on Sunday mornings from 7 to 10 on the Pierce College campus. Local car owners bring their vintage and classic rides to show them off and enjoy the camaraderie.
Seniors will appreciate the opportunity to see cars that were popular in their heyday now restored to a state of perfection.
Retail Therapy at its Finest
Shopping is still a favorite way to spend the day — or at least an afternoon — for people of all ages. There’s certainly no shortage of choices in the area. Close by, there’s Westfield Topanga & The Village in Canoga Park and The Commons at Calabasas. And if you’re looking for more glamorous shopping, there’s the Americana at Brand in Glendale and The Grove on the other side of Beverly Hills.
Fun for Friends and Family
It can be challenging to find indoor activities for seniors that other family members (including the grandkids) will enjoy, but this one is virtually guaranteed to be a hit: a pottery class at Clay Play & Arts in Northridge.
The studio offers introductory classes, so even first-timers can learn to use a pottery wheel to make a bowl or mug they’ll be proud of. Six-week courses are available as well. The place has earned scores of five-star reviews from happy potters.
