Be Sure to Take Advantage of These Senior Discounts When Shopping and Dining in Woodland Hills
February 17, 2022Along with the wisdom that comes from experience, aging offers other advantages — like senior citizen days and senior discounts. If you’ve been around long enough to meet the minimum age threshold, you can save some extra pocket money simply by showing proof of your birthdate. In some cases, you may not even need to do that!
Although some people would rather not acknowledge that they are eligible for senior discounts, others are glad to save 10% or more when they’re shopping, dining out and frequenting other retail establishments. Even if stores and restaurants don’t advertise this kind of perk, it never hurts to ask if they offer it.
In many cases, the minimum age to qualify for a senior discount is 55 — and there’s no maximum age. If you’ve earned the right to this benefit, why not make use of it?
Senior Discounts and Senior Citizen Days in the Woodland Hills Area
Warner Center and the surrounding Woodland Hills area are a slice of paradise for shoppers. You’ll also find an abundance of options if you want to go out for a meal or enjoy some of the usual activities for seniors.
The following are some of the merchants that offer senior discounts and other ways to save if you’re reached a certain age. If you start checking around, you’ll no doubt find more.
- If you ask, you’ll likely find that many, if not most, of the national and regional chain restaurants in and around Woodland Hills offer a discount of 10% or more for seniors. If they don’t offer a discount, they may offer a free item instead, such as a beverage. Some go so far as to offer a senior-specific menu with reduced prices.
- Retail stores. Certain chain stores offer senior discounts that you can use when shopping in the store, and some extend the discount for use online.*For example, if you’ve ever wondered, “What day is senior day at Kohl’s?” the answer is Wednesday. Each week, Kohl’s will give in-store shoppers who are at least 60 years old 15% off.Or maybe you’ve been curious about when senior day is at Walgreens. That would be the first Tuesday of each month. On that day, if you’re an AARP member, or you’re 55 or older, you can save up to 20% on qualifying items at Walgreens stores.
If you’re into arts and crafts and similar hobbies for seniors, then you’ll want to check out Michaels, where you can get 10% off your entire purchase on the first Tuesday of each month if you’re at least 55.
Here’s one more we found: Ross offers 10% off on Tuesdays to those who are 55 or older.
*In some cases, you may be required to sign up for a free “club” membership to access the discount. Certain brands and categories of items may be excluded from the discount offer.
- Grocery stores. At select locations, Ralphs offers a 10% discount on private brand groceries and certain other items on the first Tuesday of each month if you’re 55 or older.**
**Information was obtained from the toll-free customer service number, where we were told that Ralphs discounts are the same as those available at Fred Meyer stores. - Are you a fan of the cinema? If so, AMC offers a senior discount at both the Promenade 16 location in Woodland Hills and the Fallbrook 7 location in West Hills. The discount is good “all day, every day” when you buy your tickets online.
Note: While we were compiling this information, we found that many places had changed their policies on senior discounts and senior citizen days in the last couple of years. Although this information was accurate when the post was written, you may want to check the merchant’s website for updates or call and ask to be sure the discounts are still available.
Woodland Hills and The Variel: A Prime Spot for Senior Living
As we draw closer to welcoming the first residents at The Variel, we’re more excited than ever about being one of the newest retirement communities in California. With everything that’s available so close by, Warner Center is the ideal community for the active lifestyle residents will expect to continue when they move into The Variel.
What’s more, the upscale amenities you’ll find at The Variel will provide a welcome alternative to going out or staying at home. Here, there’s a “third” choice.
Let’s say you’re in the mood to relax and indulge in a big screen viewing of a favorite film — but you’d just as soon not deal with buying tickets and traffic and parking. You won’t even have to venture outside to enjoy The Variel’s theater, complete with a seriously excellent sound system and comfortably plush leather seating.
If you don’t feel like cooking in your gourmet kitchen, but you also don’t want to get in the car and drive, you’ll be able to saunter over to any of our on-site dining venues to enjoy a superbly prepared meal.
Maybe you want to nurture yourself with a yoga class or start your day with a workout. Yet, the thought of heading to the neighborhood gym and being around a lot of people you don’t know makes you want to change your mind.
Instead, you can go to the Zenergy Fitness Center, where you can join your new friends for a yoga, Pilates or fitness class. Or work through your personalized routine on brand-new cardio and strengthening equipment designed with older adults in mind. Or go for an invigorating swim in the indoor therapy pool.
Afterward, you decide to treat yourself to a massage and then top off the experience with a delicious smoothie from the Zenergy Juice Bar. Maybe later you’ll head to the on-site salon for some pampering or practice your swing on the 1502™ Golf Simulator.
That’s the kind of senior living you’ll find at The Variel.
Why the ‘Community’ Aspect Is So Important
We’ve put a tremendous amount of time and effort into planning a community where residents can truly engage in “inspired senior living.” Here’s why.
Research indicates that a person’s attitude toward getting older can affect how he or she actually physically ages. For a long time, studies have demonstrated an association between stress and physical health. Now, researchers have taken those findings further.
A study by Dakota Witzel and Robert Stawski published on January 10, 2021, in the Journals of Gerontology, Series B, suggests that seniors who have a relatively positive attitude toward aging may be better able to fend off the physical health symptoms linked to stress when compared with seniors who have a more negative attitude toward getting older.
One of the best ways to maintain an upbeat outlook is to stay engaged, stay active and stay involved. Social isolation in elderly people can lead to loneliness, and that can initiate — or exacerbate — a downward spiral. Elderly people experiencing loneliness can become depressed or anxious, which in turn can cause emotional, physical and mental health issues.
Our goal at The Variel is to provide an environment where residents feel inspired to maintain (or discover or return to) a vibrant, active lifestyle. It’s our hope that they will take advantage of the opportunities to experience an improved quality of life, both immediately and as they get older.
When people feel better about their quality of life, their outlook naturally brightens. In a community like the one we envision building at The Variel, friendships flourish and people feel motivated to participate. In short, the spiral trends upward.
