9 Myths About Assisted Living That May Be Holding You Back
October 9, 2025One of the most common and enduring misperceptions about assisted living communities is that they’re the same as nursing homes. In many cases, people who haven’t visited an assisted living community still think of them as places for those who are sick or frail.
This is unfortunate because it keeps a lot of older adults from enjoying a more satisfying way of life. A community with assisted living like The Variel appeals to vibrant seniors who want to maintain, or even increase, their active lifestyle by receiving a measure of assistance, as needed.
Are you exploring retirement community options for your own future or looking into potential living arrangements for a loved one? If so, this information could help dispel some preconceived notions you may have about assisted living.
First, What Is Assisted Living?
As noted, assisted living isn’t a nursing home. Nor is it a skilled nursing facility, where medical monitoring and a higher level of care are provided around the clock.
So what is it, then? To put it succinctly, assisted living offers personalized assistance with your everyday routine.
One of our previous blog posts provides more details about assisted living, including how it’s different from other types of senior living communities, as well as the pros and cons of assisted living.
A Few Examples
Assisted living might include help starting the day: getting out of bed, bathing and getting dressed. Or help with meals (although in assisted living, you always have the option to enjoy meals in the dining area).
It could also be something as simple, but crucial, as ensuring you’re taking medications as prescribed.
There are dozens of ways assisted living can make it easier to accomplish minor but necessary tasks throughout the day. You can read more about the benefits of assisted living in our earlier blog post.
Now, let’s debunk some of those myths!
Myth #1: I’ll lose my independence.
Not being able to fend for ourselves is one of the biggest concerns most of us face as we get older. It can be difficult to acknowledge that some of the usual things we do are becoming more challenging.
Some seniors view moving to assisted living as surrendering their independence. In actuality, being in an assisted living community can help seniors gain back some of the strength, mobility, confidence and social connectivity they’ve lost. In a short time, they may find they have more independence than before they moved.
Myth #2: I won’t see my friends and family as much.
Another major concern many older adults have is that they’ll be forgotten if they move into an assisted living community. The truth is there’s nothing to prevent you from visiting with the favorite people in your life, whether you go see them or they come see you.
You’re welcome to entertain guests in your home, and many communities, like The Variel, have a private dining room residents can reserve for special occasions. If you plan to have frequent overnight guests, you can choose a residence with an extra bedroom.
If you want to visit friends and family who live a distance away, leaving your home in assisted living may make it easier. Why? Because you won’t have to worry about having someone look after your house while you’re away. In an assisted living community, you can just pack up and go!
Myth #3: I’ll have to move away from my spouse or partner.
Many assisted living communities are part of a larger senior living community that also offers independent living. These communities, like The Variel, are ideal for couples who want to stay together when one needs a higher level of care than the other.
In some senior living communities, it’s possible for both spouses or partners to live in the same residence. Even in communities where they need to be in separate residences, they’re still close enough to spend the vast majority of their time together.
Myth #4: I’ll have to give up my pet.
These days, many assisted living communities encourage new residents to bring their furry family member with them when they move. While each community’s amenities and services differ, pet-friendly communities have areas where residents can walk their dogs.
Myth #5: It won’t feel like home, and I won’t fit in.
To make your best choice, it’s important to research and visit several communities. You can pare down your list based on information that’s available online. This previous blog post can help you know what to look for when evaluating communities.
Once you’ve selected a few good candidates, you can get a feel for what they’re like by spending some time in them. You’ll be able to tell whether you’d feel comfortable there, and you should have the opportunity to talk with at least a couple of residents to see what they do and don’t like about the community.
At The Variel, we encourage residents to decorate their homes to suit their own tastes. And if you enjoy having a good time with warm, welcoming neighbors, chances are you’ll be making new friends in no time at all.
Myth #6: I’ll have to follow someone else’s rules and schedule.
This is another instance where you’ll want to do some research and ask questions when visiting. Many assisted living communities give residents complete freedom to set their own schedule.
A possible exception might be mealtimes. Some communities might have specific windows of time during which they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Others, like The Variel, have dining available from early in the morning until late evening.
Some communities also ask that you let the staff know when you’re up and about, just as a way of ensuring you’re all right.
Myth #7: I’ll be bored, with little to do all day.
If you’ve done some research into senior living communities, then you already know that most offer a broad assortment of activities, classes and social events. In fact, new residents can sometimes feel slightly overwhelmed (in a good way!) by the many choices they have each day.
It’s not unusual to discover new passions and pastimes after moving into a senior living community. Many new residents, whether they’re in independent living or assisted living, find they become more active than they were before they moved.
Take a look at this previous blog post for an idea of the types of activities you can expect.
Myth #8: The food will be bland and uninspiring.
When visiting potential communities, see if you can schedule your visit during mealtime and sample the fare. Many communities will be happy to accommodate your request.
We take great pride in the delicious, nutritious food we offer in all four of our dining venues and the Zenergy juice bar. The internationally acclaimed executive chef we brought on board earlier this year has residents raving about the cuisine he introduced!
Myth #9: It costs too much.
All too often, people dismiss even the idea of moving to an assisted living community because they assume they can’t afford it. But if they compare the cost of assisted living versus the total costs of staying in their home (including property taxes, insurance, home repairs, HOA fees, care received in the home, etc.), they’re frequently surprised at how affordable assisted living can be.
The monthly fee you’ll pay in an assisted living community typically covers:
- Meals
- Utilities
- Scheduled transportation
- Housekeeping
- Maintenance
- Security services
- Fitness and wellness programs
- Social activities
- The personalized assistance you receive from trained staff members
We invite you to talk with a member of our team at The Variel who can help you evaluate your costs.
